The paper presents a collaborative on-line learning system for open and distance learningthat tries to respond to the requirements of an efficient and motivating learning process. The system comprises several learning modes that try to combine the traditional style ofteaching with “problem-based” learning: learning by being told, problem-centreddemonstrations, problem analysis, and assessment of acquired knowledge. A fifth mode, creative problem solving, as an essential part of the learner-centred approach, will besupported by future versions of the system. Cooperative learning is achieved eitherbetween the student and the tutor or inside a group of learners interacting or not with thehuman tutor. Student interactions with the system may be either synchronous orasynchronous. The system is a CSCW environment enhanced with artificial agents thatrepresent an active part in the learning process. It includes personal agents to assist thestudents and the human tutor, an artificial tutor that tries to partially replace the humanone during student interactions with the system, and an information agent to searchrelevant information. Keywords: Computer Supported Collaborative Learning, Agent Architecture,Pedagogical Agent
