The engine fuelled by renewable sources is the potential research for existing energy demand. This paper discuss about the investigation on compression ignition engine fuelled by pongamia pinnata biodiesel as injected fuel and hydrogen as inducted fuel. The effects on performance and thermal balance of a CI engine fuelled by biodiesel and hydrogen were observed. The comparative study is made with experiments on conventional diesel fuel, biodiesel and biodiesel with hydrogen. The results provided an improved brake thermal efficiency of biodiesel fuelled engine with hydrogen as secondary fuel comparing with engine fuelled by conventional diesel and pure biodiesel. The performance and thermal balance tests were conducted by calculating brake thermal efficiency (ηth), brake specific fuel consumption (sfc), heat loss by cooling water (Qw), heat loss by exhaust gas (Qe) and unaccounted heat losses (Qu). The brake specific fuel consumption of biodiesel decreased with hydrogen induction. The brake thermal efficiency is 31.68% for diesel, 29.41% for pure biodiesel and 32.56% for biodiesel with hydrogen induction.
