A 5GHz wide tuning range LC-VCO in sub-micrometer CMOS technology

A 1.2 V low-cost voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) has been implemented in a CMOS/RF 90 nm technology. The VCO, which uses a LC- tank topology, has a centre frequency of 5 GHz with a 30% tuning range from 4.24 GHz to 5.74 GHz. Worst case estimations of the phase noise after layout and package parasitic extraction are -98.8 dBc/Hz and -115 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz and 5 MHz offsets from the carrier, respectively. The power consumption is 2.52 mW and it occupies less than 0.07 mm2.
