Thiabendazole Treatment of Presumptive Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM)

From Babies and Childrens Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, O. Correspondence to Bernard Boxerbaum, M.D., Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital, 2103 Adelbert Road, Cleveland, O. 44106. VISCERAL larva migrans (VLM), also known as visceral toxocariasis, should be suspected when fever, eosinophilia, hyperglobulinemia, and hepatomegaly appear in a child who is exposed to cats or dogs which may be infested with Toxocara cati or T. canis, respectively.~ Another less common manifestation is persistent unresponsive pneumonitis. 2-7 The diagnosis may be established by demonstration of larvae or of an eosinophilic granuloma in biopsied tissue. No specific drug treatment of VLM was known until 1966 when Nelson&dquo; reported the apparent successful use of thiabendazole 2-(4-thiazolyl)-benzimidazole, in a 15-monthold child with a Toxocara infection.
