The Poor Gain from Statistical Multiplexing in the Homogeneous and the Heterogeneous Case

Abstract The success of using Statistical Multiplexing for traffic admission control to an ATM-link strongly depends on the source characteristics. In this paper the direct relation between the statistical multiplexing gain and the source parameter values is shown for the homogeneous case: multiplexing sources with the same traffic characteristics. For the heterogeneous case the gain is smaller and we found that this is mainly caused by differences in peakrate rather than differences in burstiness.
