BBU aggregation for maximizing the resource utilization in Optical-Enabled cloud radio access networks

Optical-Enabled cloud radio access network (CRAN) divides legacy base station into remote radio heads (RRH) and centralized baseband units (BBU) pools. In this paper, we focus on the improvement of BBU resource utilization, and propose a BBU aggregation by dynamically awaking and sleeping BBU cards under time-geometry pattern. We discuss the BBU capacity model, and two heuristic algorithms are developed to minimize the number of active BBU cards. Simulation comparisons are performed between two kind of different cell sites. Numerical evaluations show that BBU aggregation can significantly increase the BBU utilization.
