Ultrasound attenuation imaging in the OS calcis

Ultrasound transmission measurement through the os calcis is an emerging technique which is considered with great interest by scientists and clinicians as a promising clinical tool for ear ly assessment of osteoporosis. A complete assessment of the broadband ultrasonic attenuation distribution within the os calcis was made, using an ultrasonic mechanical scanning device with focused transducers. High quality images were obtained when compared to CT. These images permit the selection of optimal regions of in te res t for u l t r a s o u n d a t t e n u a t i o n measurement. It should make the results less sensitive to the positioning 01 the transducers.
