CMOS Wideband Pulse Generators for UWB Transmitter Applications

A CMOS pulse generator capable of transmitting biphase wide band gated pulses is demonstrated. The pulse generator is an essential component of a prototype fully integrated UWB transmitter. The pulse generator can be used for impulse radio with BPSK or DBPSK modulations. The measured results show that the fabricated pulse generator design outputs pulses of ~6ns in width (equivalent to a first null bandwidth of -300 MHz). A new pulse generator design is proposed that is insensitive to parasitics/mismatches to generate accurate pulses meeting the 500 MHz bandwidth requirements for UWB systems.
