Hierarchical Models in Solution of Large Power Systems Control Problems

Abstract It is shown in this paper how the basic principles of functional modeling can be applied to solution of optimization and control problems in large power systems and interconnections. According to these principles a power system is represented by hierarchical model consisting of systems of equations of two levels: systems of equations of subsystems (lower level) and system of connection equations (upper level), in which only boundary variables and integral variables of subsystems are present. Solution of optimization problems based on these principles is carried out as coordinated solution of optimization problems of two levels: optimization problems of subsystems on lower level and optimization problem of upper level – determination of optimal power flows between subsystems. This organization of solution of optimal operation problems forms the basis for creation of efficient distributed control systems intended for application in large power systems and interconnections.
