THE PHENOMENA OF SHIP SQUAT

The ship squat is defined as the overall decrease in the underkeel clearance forward or aft. Various signs that the ship has entered shallow water conditions are summarized. Formulas for predicting ship squat are given taking into account ship speed, block coefficient and the blockage factor (e.g. the immersed cross-section of the ship's midship section divided by the cross-section of the canal or river).
