Energy cost saving potential in educational buildings-case study of MUT campus

This paper gives preliminary results on the energy audit being conducted on Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) building facilities, by the Centre for the Development of Green Technologies. The aim of the project is to identify possible areas of energy wastage on campus in order to reduce cost associated with electrical energy consumption. To achieve this, A PEL 103 Power & Energy data logger is used to collect energy data from one of the MUT Feeders/Substations. The analysis of results shows that a huge amount of electrical energy is wasted during holidays, weekends and workweek days (early mornings and nights) whilst no service is required on campus. It is believed that most of this energy wastage comes from the operation of air conditioning systems during nights and holidays.
