WLAN MIMO antennas for smart watch applications

In this paper, a MIMO antenna design with for smart watch applications that works in the WLAN bands (2.4/5.2/5.8GHz bands) is proposed. The overall dimensions of the MIMO antenna design are 41×41×4.8 mm3, and the two-antenna array (including the surrounding housing) are built on FR4 substrate with 0.8 mm thickness and relative permittivity of 4.4. Each antenna array element is a loop antenna type incorporated with a shorted arm. In order to achieve desirable dual-band WLAN operation, an inductor chip is connected in series with the shorting arm that connected to the system ground. Because the proposed MIMO antenna design is small in size and has exhibited good performances and isolation, it is therefore suitable for integrating into any smart watch devices.
