Optimal Design of Laplacian Pyramid for the Structural Similarity Index

The Laplacian pyramid (LP) has a wide range of applications in the multiresolution processing and can be characterized as an oversampled filter banks (OFB). Based on the structure similarity index, the optimal algorithm of the LP synthesis filter bank is designed in this paper. Compared with the traditional reconstruction algorithms, various numerical examples shows that the reconstructed image based on the SSIM criteria has a better image quality.
