Mallard Tail-Wagging: Punctuation for Animal Communication?

These diversities are not very different; since the calculations are based on a total census of only 86 birds in both areas, the difference is probably not statistically significant. The evenness function supports this conclusion. In view of these values, the lower species diversity in the more diverse forest, which Vuilleumier thought difficult o explain, is no longer a problem. Vuilleumier's hypotheses (that colonists were preadapted to mesophytic forest, and that new colonization is more difficult in rain forest because of higher densities of existent species) are not necessary. This note was read and criticized by G. J. Vermeij; calculations were verified by D. Gill.
