Lessons Learned from Applying Business Modelling: Exploring Opportunities and Avoiding Pitfalls

In applying Business Modelling, what issues have proved to be the most relevant ones? Where have we succeeded, what pitfalls could be noted and why did they probably occur? After a brief review of some practical implications of basic infological concepts the often discussed issue of simple vs. sophisticated models is commented upon from the practitioner’s viewpoint. A “multiple simple model” strategy is advocated. Confluence from business style, participativeness and group dynamics is brought into the picture. The effects of recent trends like Business Process Management and Object Orientation are discussed. Finally, some comments are given concerning the need for tools for model documentation and communication. We need to accomplish the “dynamic documentation state” to take full advantage of Business Modelling as a major vehicle for business development.
