The temperature distributions in thin foil and semi-infinite targets bombarded by an electron beam

The equations describing the temperature distributions produced in a target by a heat source whose radial intensity variation obeys the Gaussian distribution law are developed from the general heat flow equation. Thin foil and semi-infinite targets are considered for both stationary and moving heat sources and the energy of the source is assumed to be absorbed entirely in the surface plane of the target. No account is taken of any change of state of the target material. The equations thus derived are solved in a general manner and graphs are given of the results, which are applicable to any combination of target material and source parameters. The general form of the presentation makes the graphs suitable for use in problems other than that for which they were originally prepared.
