On the Solution of a Second Order Linear Homogeneous Difference Equation with Variable Coefficients

Abstract A closed form solution of a second order linear homogeneous difference equation with variable coefficients is presented. As an application of this solution, we obtain expressions for cos n θ and sin( n + 1)θ/sin θ as polynomials in cos θ.
