Earthmoving on Construction Projects: A Postscript

Most construction projects require the movement of enormous quantities of earth materials. In the February 1983 issue of Interfaces Perry and Iliff described a pilot study using the transportation model to decide on these earth movements during the construction of a major international airport. The out-of-kilter algorithm was used to find precise sand rehandling contract packages. Cost savings approached a million dollars for about three man-weeks of consulting time.
