GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE LAYOUT AND PLANTING OF PARKING AREAS

This monograph gives some guidelines and describes methods of improving the appearance of parking areas thus contributing to the landscaping of towns. The following aspects are considered: (1) composition of the floor of car parks: wearing course and roadbase. Bituminous materials are excluded in favour of a double surface dressing consisting of 5/10 river gravel. Costs are quoted for different solutions proposed. (2) soil gradient - transverse and longitudinal profile - surface water is drained towards the vegetation. (3) use of trees planted over the whole of the parking area (prevents thermal shock to vehicle occupants). Details are given of the selection of trees, planting and maintenance techniques and costs. Regulations and financial measures for the implementation of the programme are outlined. /TRRL/
