Analysing a 400 kV power system for an expert system switching

This paper analyses the switching regime of an important part of the 400 kV Romanian Power System, by means of transient simulations. It defines the best point on wave for the switching operations for a shunt reactor for reactive power/voltage control in a distribution substation. The main purpose of the study is to determine the over-voltages generated in the system when a complex 400 kV subsystem is energized and de-energized. It was assumed that the measurement points were situated at the source side, the shunt reactor side, the overhead lines and the load side. This paper proposes a switching strategy to minimize bus voltage variations and the number of shunt reactor commutations.
