AIRPORT SAVES WITH HOT IN-PLACE RECYLING

Hot in-place asphalt recycling was selected by Deer Park, Washington, as the method to replace its deteriorating asphalt airport pavements. The tremendous cost savings (one-third to one-half less than a 4-in. asphalt overlay) as well as the potential improvements to the runway asphalt made this the method of choice for Deer Park. The process centered around three machines, two preheaters and one reformer. The preheater is a self-propelled propane fueled infrared heater capable of producing heat in excess of 25 million Btu per hour. The reformer has an infrared heating device, a hopper for aggregate or hot mix, a scarifier to help break up the pavement surface, a rejuvenator spray bar, and three mixers that blend the rejuvenated mixture ahead of two screeds for spreading. The Cyclogen L (registered trademark) recycling agent used was selected because of its long and successful performance history in hot recycling. Approximately 39,000 yards were recycled at a cost of $2.80 per square yard, including mobilization costs.
