Recent Progress in Metasurface Antennas Using Characteristic Mode Analysis

This paper reviews the recent progress in metasurface (MTS) antennas using characteristic mode analysis (CMA), including the modeling, modal analysis, modal excitation, modal manipulation, and modal synthesis of metasurfaces. The characteristics, operating mechanisms, and functions of MTS antennas based on the combinations of multiple modes are reviewed and summarized. The unique technical merits of MTS antennas are addressed.
