Automotive Applications of Integrated Structural Optimization

The advent of computer technology has pushed the automotive industry into a new era. The rapid link between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Method (FEM) provides a very efficient design tool in dealing with complicated structures which was not possible before. In this paper, an integrated structural optimization approach is presented to demonstrate its application in the automotive industry. This integrated system consists of two important phases: topology optimization and geometry optimization. In the topology optimization phase, a homogenization method is used to identify the optimal topology under static and dynamic design considerations. After the optimal topology image is generated by the topology optimization design phase, a geometry optimization is used to refine this design. Two practical design examples of the integrated structural optimization are presented to show the usefulness of this approach. First, we would like to discuss briefly about this integrated structural optimization approach.
