Epstein-Barr Virus Mononucleosis: Neurologic Complications

N eurologic complications of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection have been known for more than 60 yearsl and include cerebellitis, meningoencephalitis, aseptic meningitis, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barr6 syndrome, and cranial neuritis.2-4 Nervous system disorders occur in 1% to 18% of the patients hospitalized for infectious mononucleosis (IM).2,3,5,6 Neurologic symptoms may be the first and unique manifestation of EBV disease, without the classic hallmarks of acute IM (tonsillopharyngitis, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, lymphadenopathy).2,3,7,8 This paper presents 2 cases of acute EBV infection with predominant and serious neurologic complications in pediatric patients.
