Second Order Sliding Mode Observers for the ADDSAFE Benchmark Problem

Abstract This paper presents the theoretical development of second order sliding mode observer schemes for two different ADDSAFE aircraft fault detection benchmark problems: one for sensor faults and one for actuator faults. For the sensor fault problem, a robust sliding mode reconstruction scheme based on an LPV system is presented. The scheme involves transforming the sensor fault reconstruction problem into an actuator reconstruction problem, and then the fault reconstruction is obtained from the equivalent output error injection signals associated with a second order sliding mode structure. For the actuator jam/runaway problem, a similar idea is considered using a local actuator model. Simulation results from the high fidelity nonlinear ADDSAFE benchmark aircraft model show the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
