Far-infrared absorption of silver β-alumina

The far-infrared absorption spectrum of stoichiometric silver beta -alumina shows that the silver ions occupy predominantly a single type of site at low temperature. By contrast, in non-stoichiometric silver beta -alumina three principal configurations are found at low temperatures. The spectra of both materials change markedly on warming to room temperature. Explanations of the infrared data are proposed which are consistent with results of neutron and X-ray structural studies.
