Cutaneous Tuberculosis

M ycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, and rarely, the attenuated Bacillus Calmette-Cuerin vaccine (BCG) are responsible for causing cutaneous tuberculosis,^ "* The vole bacillius' used for vaccination in the past has been reported to cause lupus murinus at the site of inoculation, M, tuberculosis is a facultative, intracellular, aerobic, acid-fast bacillus, naturally pathogenic only for humans. Tubercle bacilli are slender, curved, delicate, often beaded or banded rods, 1 -4 jum long and about 0,5 /um in diameter,^'' occurring either singly, in pairs, or clumps. The bacilli are nonmotile, nonsporing, and noncapsulated.® They do not stain easily with the Gram stain because of their high lipid cell content, but once stained by the Ziehl-Neelsen method, they strongly resist decolorization with acid and alcohol,' The highly complex cell wall components (cord factor, high molecular weight lipids and waxes. Wax D, tuberculo-protein) determine the mycobacterial physiology and may influence the pattern of host re-
