Abstract A fast polarimeter based on heterodyne frequency mixing is presented. The time resolution achievable in principle is of the order of tens of nanoseconds. Several versions of the basic structure providing different performances suitable to various applications are discussed. An experimental set-up with a coherent visible source is checked. Measurement readings and computed results give a quite satisfactory agreement.
