Presenting the Relevance of Suggested Information

Users experience an almost continuous stream of information, making it necessary for them to decide to which information to attend and which to ignore. Indications about the relevance of specific information items can help. We report two experiments on the display of the relevance of information in the context of mobile devices, comparing different display formats and levels of resolution of the information. The results show that people prefer relatively few levels of relevance indications (two or three) and that numeric or graphic (bar) formats are usually preferred. We discuss some implications for the design of relevance indicators.
