Digital coding techniques for visual communications

Abstract With the growing availability of optical fiber links and rapid progress on signal processing and VLSI technology, visual communications have become more feasible than ever, both technically and economically. Successful design of video coders for various applications is a necessity to provide cost-effective visual communication services, due to limited bandwidth and storage space. In this paper, several important video coding schemes, both intraframe and interframe, are reviewed. Transform coding and subband coding, which have gained more attention recently, are emphasized in particular. A survey and a technical comparison of motion estimation for compensated interframe coding are presented. Results are given to illustrate the performance of some particular algorithms.
