The purpose of this study was to find the differences between the housing needs of residents who lived in two cities, Busan and Gimhae. The housing needs of these residents were compared through their housing lifestyle which was defined by living pattern and the attitudes of room layouts in housing units. The subjects were 400 housewives who lived in Haeundae, Busan (A-area) and Naewoe-Dong, Gimhae (B-area). These two areas are newtowns built in the 1990s. A-area is located in a large metropolitan city, whereas B-area is in a middle-sized city. Data were collected using a paper questionnaire or Web-based VR media. The findings were as follows. (1) the characteristics of the households such as age and social status differed between the two areas. (2) Five factors of the living pattern and six factors of the attitudes of room layout in the housing units were extracted. (3) Five types of housing lifestyle were categorized through the eleven factors of each area. Based on the types of housing lifestyle, housing needs were identified. The five types of housing needs in A-area were 'the open familyroom-oriented type', 'the modern kitchen-oriented type', 'the advanced private-room type', 'the open cooking-laundry space type', and 'the open livingroom-oriented type'.
