Stress relaxation behaviour of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride)

Abstract The stress relaxation behaviour of poly-(vinyl chloride) plasticized with different amounts (15–30 wt.%) of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) was studied at 25, 40 and 60°C. An increase in temperature had a similar influence as an increase in the concentration of DOP on the position of the curves along the time axis and also on the curve shape. The maximum slope of the relaxation curves in a stress versus In(time) diagram was always linearly related to the initial stress of the experiment, but the proportionality constant passed through a maximum at about 20°C above the glass transition temperature. The results obtained are discussed in terms of a novel cooperative flow model and a power law relation between relaxation rate and stress.
