Optimal Location of FACTS Devices for Transient Stability Enhancement Based on Critical Clearing Time (CCT)

This paper presents the optimal placement of FACTS devices for transient stability based on Critical Clearing Time (CCT). A three phase to ground fault is created at buses close to generators and far away from the generating units with different loading conditions. SVC is placed at different locations and critical clearing time is found for each location. It is observed that as the loading is increased the CCT is decreased making the system unstable. Also when the fault is far away from the generating units the CCT is more. So it is concluded that the fault close to the generators must be cleared rapidly as compared to fault away from the generators. The location of FACTS devices also depends on the fault location. It is observed that by placing SVC at that location, CCT has been improved leading to the enhancement of transient stability of power system.
