Abstract An information retrieval and data analysis system is developed for analyzing surveyed data by questionnaire on living environment of local residents. The questionnaire has new forms of a free association test and a controlled association test. All the surveyed data are coded and stored as a database. A system of data analysis softwares is designed and developed for the present database. The whole system is divided into three subsystems of information retrieval, basic statistics, and advanced techniques of analyzing cognitive structures. The last subsystem includes new methods of twoway clustering and a method of neighborhood for analyzing data of free association test. Theoretical aspects as well as results of application of these methods to the present survey are discussed.
