THREE PROJECTS FROM THE ADVISORY BODY ARE DISCUSSED: IN A SECTION DEALING WITH THE USE OF SAFETY BELTS IN SWITZERLAND, IT IS REPORTED THAT THE WEARING OF SAFETY BELTS INCREASED SHARPLY BETWEEN MAY 1975 AND FEBRUARY 1976, BUT THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A SLIGHT REDUCTION. THE OVERALL PICTURE SHOWS THAT IN MAY 1976, 92% OF DRIVERS ON MOTORWAYS WORE SAFETY BELTS, 85% OF DRIVERS OUTSIDE BUILT UP AREAS AND 78% OF DRIVERS IN BUILT UP AREAS. THE NUMBER OF INJURED AND DEAD IN THE FIRST HALF OF 1976 WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN COMPARISON TO THE SIMILAR PERIOD OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IN A REPORT REGARDING THE ANALYSIS OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT THE MOST FREQUENT CASE OF INJURY TO PEDESTRIANS ARISES WHERE THE PEDESTRIAN IS KNOCKED DOWN FROM THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT WHILST CROSSING THE STREET (29% OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS). THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF ACCIDENT OCCURS WHEN THE PEDESTRIAN IS KNOCKED DOWN WHILST CROSSING THE STREET AT A JUNCTION ON THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING BY VEHICLES DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD (21% OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS). A STUDY OF ACCIDENTS ON MOTORWAY BRIDGES AND MOTORWAY TUNNELS CONCERNS ITSELF WITH THE PROBLEM OF PEOPLE FALLING FROM MOTORWAY BRIDGES (GENERALLY DRIVERS, WHO HAVE LEFT THEIR VEHICLES AFTER AN ACCIDENT IN FOG OR DARKNESS). HITHERTO, HOWEVER, NO CLEAR KNOWLEDGE HAS BEEN OBTAINED, MAINLY BECAUSE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ACCIDENT REPORTS AVAILABLE IS TOO SMALL AND THE QUALITY OF THE DATA IS NOT SATISFACTORY. IN REGARD TO THE PROBLEM OF ROAD TUNNELS, IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT LONG TUNNELS WITH SPEED RESTRICTIONS GENERALLY HAD A LOW ACCIDENT RATE. FINALLY, A REPORT IS MADE OF THE WORK OF THE SKS SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON "THE FURTHER TRAINING OF MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS". THE COMMITTEE'S FUNCTION IS THE PRODUCTION OF THE NECESSARY PREREQUISITES FOR SUITABLE FURTHER TRAINING OF DRIVERS.
