An internet-4MAT-CAL system for adaptive finite element mesh refinement

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new learning paradigm in the teaching finite elements (FE) in analysis and design. The goal is to train students and practicing engineers within the “Borderless University” to think, learn and exercise competent judgment while using FE adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques in engineering design and analysis. This is done using a special module which is structured into the following four layers: 1. Analytical software: Analytical software comprising the finite element engine resides on a Unix system. The user interface is available on a range of platforms connected to local and wide area networks, 2. World wide web (WWW), 3. Computer-assisted learning (CAL), 4. 4MAT-based Internet lab experiments and teaching. The module recognises a wide range of learning activities which includes Reason for type one learners, Facts for type two learners, Trying mechanisms for type three learners and Discovery for type four learners, identified within the 4MAT System. In addition, the CAL-WWW- FE-AMR-4MAT module improves the rate of learning and allows self-paced learning. Furthermore, the module enables students and practicing engineers within the concept of “Borderless University” to become active learners. Also, the module allows students to develop an ability to identify, synthesise and analyse problems, by observing cause and effect relationships.
