Relación entre la frecuencia diaria de consumo de azúcares extrínsecos y la prevalencia de caries dental

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between the daily intake of extrinsic sugar consumption (DIESC) and the prevalence of dental decay in Peruvian children whose ages range from 2 to 13 years of age. The sample consisted of 1331 children who went to the Central Stomatologic Clinic of the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia from 1999 to 2003. The information was obtained from the database of the Children and Adolescent Academic Department of Stomatology. The chi-square test was used to establish the relationship between DIESC and the prevalence of dental decay. We found that in any DIESC dental decay maintained a high prevalence of over 80%, and found no relation between the DIESC and the prevalence of dental decay. In addition we found that 72% of the population had a DIESC of over 3 times per day and prevalence of dental decay was 89.6%.
