Therapeutic Applications of Alpha Interferon for Chronic Viral Hepatitis in Pediatric Patients

Hepatitis B virus is a doublestranded DNA virus belonging to the Hepadnavirus family. The only important source of the virus is the reservoir of chronically infected human beings. Approximately 1,500,000 Americans are chronic carriers and 200,000 new cases of HBV infection occur yearly in the United States. More than 10,000 patients are hospitalized each year with hepatitis B and 250 people die each year of fulminant hepatitis. Five thousand individuals die an-
