Experience of ASR in the Netherlands

An overview is given of experience of alkali-silica reaction, ASR, in the Netherlands, reflecting on concrete mixes and aggregates involved, and the assessment of ASR affected structures. Recently published guidelines to prevent concrete damage due to ASR are introduced. These rely on limiting the effective amount of alkali available for reaction by use of blast furnace slag cement or Portland – fly ash cement, or, if these measures are not applied, testing of the reactivity of aggregate
