Optimal Power Flow Considering Loading Margin Stability Using Lightning Attachment Optimization Technique

This paper presents a new application of a novel algorithms called Lightning Attachment Procedure Optimization (LAPO) for optimal power system planning by determining the fittest operating point including generators power outputs and terminal voltages, Transformers tap, FACTS parameter settings to minimize the production generation cost, mitigate the active power losses and enhance the voltage profile for improving the loading margin stability consequently, enhancing the system security. STATCOM is an effective device due to its ability to inject or absorb reactive power for voltage control. In this paper the best position and rating of STATCOM is considered in power system planning. The optimal location of STATCOM is assigned by using the voltage stability index while its size is determined by LAPO. The presented planning methodology is tested on stranded transmission system. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of LAPO technique for solving the optimal power flow.
