The second edition of Instant Notes in Bioinformatics has been restructured to provide material for informatics students irrespective of their chosen field and shows how these generic informatics skills are being applied to most aspects of the life sciences, and not simply molecular biology where it first flourished. It is divided into three parts: the first is an introduction to bioinformatics in biology; the second covers the physical, mathematical, statistical and computational basis of bioinformatics, using biological examples wherever possible; and the third describes biological application domains, giving specific detail and including data standards. The applications covered are: molecular biology, metabolism, anatomy, physiology, and complex information sources, specifically image datasets and natural-language texts).
