DERMATOLOGY IN 1876: AN ACCOUNT OF THE SPECIALTY IN PHILADELPHIA DURING THE CENTENNIAL YEAR

In 1876, at the time of the Centennial celebration, dermatology was just beginning to emerge as a distinctive specialty. The concept of medical specialization was an innovative one, stimulated in part by the War between the States and fostered by the rapidly developing technology of the second half of the nineteenth century. Within the immediate decade preceding the Centennial/ the first professors of dermatology had been appointed,2 the first journals devoted to cutaneous medicine had appeared,' and even a dermatology society had been formed.'*
