DEVELOPMENT OF A HEADWAY DISTANCE CONTROL SYSTEM

In this paper, the authors present a headway distance control system for platoon driving on an automated highway system (AHS). The method makes it possible to obtain acceleration and deceleration regardless of the vehicle speed range and the rate of acceleration or deceleration. The authors also present a control method which uses inter-vehicle communication and laser radar to maintain a constant headway between vehicles. Simulation and driving tests results show that the use of these methods are effective in headway control.
