The partisans of a sane approach to food safety in this country have been fighting an uphill battle. In supporting the judicious use of agricultural chemicals in crop and livestock production, in declaring the benefits of using food additive chemicals known through extensive research to be safe under conditions of intended use, and in describing our modern food supply as the most abundant, varied, and wholesome of all time, they have truth on their side. Yet they have labored against long odds, for their opponents have sensationalism as a weapon, and a great sea of ignorance on which to float distortions and untruths. Perhaps those who work on the side of truth in this matter could find ways to sensationalize their story, countering emotional appeal with emotional appeal.
