Unsaturated Resilient Behavior of a Natural Compacted Sand

This work presents the effect of unsaturated states on the short-term resilient behaviour of granular materials for roads. We present the characteristics of hydraulic behaviour of different materials and we characterize the maximum strength with direct shear tests and the resilient behaviour with repeated load triaxial tests. Additionally, the suction, based on the effective stress concept, was added in a nonlinear elastic model used for the mechanical behaviour of the unsaturated granular soils. The response of the proposed model formulated in terms of effective stress is compared with a similar model formulated in terms of total stress. It is suggested that since the model parameters for the effective stress formulation are relatively constant for all values of suction (water content), the resilient response can be best captured by an effective stress model.
