Power quality improvement for DG by advanced control methods

It is now well established that global warming is clearly obvious and that it will be of more concern in the future. This fact is now being taken into consideration by industrialized countries. But in developing regions like Africa, mainly pre-occupied with the immediate problem of reversing the persistent decline of their centralized power system, although their contribution to the global greenhouse phenomenon is smaller compared to that of industrialised countries. This motivates the development of alternative energy resources such as distributed generation (DG) and justifies the recent interest in renewable energy in Africa. The proposed paper examines the problems related to wind generation such as the interests of using FACTS devices as reactive compensation units. It is shown that the use of advanced control methods, such as the standard Hinfin robust control method, in the control system of FACTS could improve their performance
