Scale-up of membrane systems from lab data

Abstract A procedure for evaluating the consistency of lab data obtained from batch experiments is presented. Basic design equations are then developed for batch, fed-batch, once-through, and feed-and-bleed membrane systems, and methods for incorporating the lab performance data into the designs are explained. The results show how process design and operating variables such as membrane area, feed rate and composition, and retentate composition are related in the different system configurations.
