NamPower, the national power utility of Namibia, has embarked on a feasibility study with the aim of developing a CSP project in its endeavour of achieving security of supply and its principle of increasing renewable energy technologies as part of its energy supply mix. Namibia, with one of the best solar resources in the world, has a significant opportunity to generate electricity from the sun. NamPower and Mott MacDonald conducted a wide-ranging techno-economic study, including the development of an innovative multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model to support the definition of the first CSP project, considering environmental, technical, infrastructure, socio-economic, site specific and financing aspects. This paper presents the methodology and outcomes from this decision-making tool in the context of the wider techno-economic study.
