This paper reports on the study designed to investigate the effects of text modification on incidental vocabulary learning of Korean EFL learners. Four types of modified texts containing 48 target lexical bundles were created: Baseline, enhanced version, elaborated version, and, both enhanced and elaborated version. The reading texts had been selected from authentic English newspaper/magazine articles based upon the criteria of Flesch-Kincaide reading index. A total of 83 Korean EFL learners took reading comprehension tests, receptive vocabulary tests, and productive vocabulary tests in order to assess the incidental learning of the target lexical bundles. MANOVA was used to analyze the data and 25 participants were interviewed for detailed information. Results from the receptive and productive vocabulary tests show that the elaborated text yielded the acquisition of the forms of the target lexical bundles. The implication of the study is that the elaborated text can help participants to focus on the target lexical bundles and comprehend the text better.
