The new wave of computing in colleges and universities: a social analysis

North American colleges and universities have changed noticeably in the last five years. Undergraduates care more about jobs, grades and getting through quietly. Few faculty champion these changes. Many faculty and students have also gained access to a new array of computing equipment -- from microcomputers to supercomputers. Many campuses have some kind of rudimentary computer networking and some support electronic mail for faculty and staff. New technologies can be exciting. The press and institutional announcements often romanticize this new wave of academic computerization. Every campus has a cadre of students and faculty who value some of these computerization efforts and who hope for more.
